World War II Questions Created by Students

  2. Name Germany's allies during World War II.

The following questions and answers were prepared by grade 10 Canadian history students in February 2008.

  1. Why did World War II begin?
    Answer: World War II began because Germany and it's Allies (name them) believed that they were harshly treated during WWI. Germans were displeased with the reparations of the Treaty of Versailles Adolf Hitler thought that Germans were a master race Aryan race and had the entitlement over other people.
  2. What is the significance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
    Answer: These names refer to the atomic bombing attacks on these cities in Japan, in 1945. The bombings were ordered by the US president Harry S. Truman. The first bomb was called “Little Boy” and was dropped in the city of Hiroshima Japan. The second was called “Fat Man” and was dropped on Nagasaki Japan. These are the only two attacks ever to this day that were done with nuclear weapons. This forced Japan to surrender and end the war.
  3. How were the Japanese citizens treated after the bombing of Pearl Harbor?
    Answer: After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Japanese citizens in Canada were interned. The interning of Japanese citizens in Canada began in 1942. Their families were taken to camps and separated, and all of their valuables were sold off.
  4. How was Germany involved in World War II?
    Answer: Germany started World War II. (research- find "invasion of Poland")
  5. How did Canada help Jewish people trying to migrate into Canada?
    Answer: Frederick Blair, the head of Canada's mmigration branch, refused to let any Jewish refugees immigrate to Canada. As a result, only about 4000 Jewish people had successfully immigrated between 1933 to 1939.
  6. What was the name of the raid in 1942 which was a disaster for Canadian forces?
    Answer: Dieppe ,In August 1942 five thousand Canadians lost in a raid on the seaport of Dieppe,France.
  7. What three countries were affected by World War II?
    Answer: The following countries were affected by World War II: Germany,U.S.A, Japan, Canada, Britian, France and Russia
  8. What year were the United Nations created?
    Answer: The United Nations were created in 1945.
  9. Where did Canadians leave from to go to fight?
    Answer: The Canadians left Halifax, Nova Scotia to go fight.
