Part A: Introductions and Logistics

We will introduce ourselves, learn about the course, expectations and classroom procedures.

Part B: In Class Tasks

1. Fill out and hand in the Entrance Interview and the Student Survey for Geographic knowledge. If you are new to our school, please see David to receive a computer login.

Part C: Map of the World

3. Use the map pages from your Student Agenda, the Oxford Canada Atlas found in class and web based maps to label every country of the world on the maps provided. Print each country in UPPER CASE and use arrows to point to small countries. Label major water bodies such as oceans and seas. You may use the Oxford Canada Atlas in class at school only. Do NOT take the atlas home.

4. Pick up a Passport application form from any Post Office, travel agent or Ontario Motor League office (Queen Street at Airport Road beside Staples Business Depot) in Brampton.
Or you can download the PDF file from the
Passport Office web site. Select the form for "Adults (16 years of age or over) <http://www.ppt.gc.ca/form/pdfs/pptc153.pdf>

5. Read the entire document and print out the first page (1 page only) of the History of Passports web page <http://www.ppt.gc.ca/pptc/hist.aspx?lang=eng>. Read it again and hand it in with this assignment.

10. Fill out the Passport Application form, include your guarantor contact info, sign and date it, include a photo of yourself. Insert the Passport Application form and your photo in the envelope. Print your first and last name on the bottom right hand corner on the back of the envelope. Hand in to be marked.

Part E: Demonstrate Your Writing Skills. Write a report.

11. Write a full page that answers the following question. Answer from your perspective using your general knowledge. Show your brainstorming and rough notes. Consider recent world events such as flooding in New Orleans, SARS and shootings in Toronto, the war in Iraq, bombing in London, muggings in New York and other places where tourists and business people travel.

Why should a traveler be cautious when traveling in certain countries? Describe five (5) things a traveler should do to protect their health, safety and money. Why? Explain.
