Tips for Writing Covering Letters

1. When applying for a job or exploring to see if there is a job opening, do some research about the company. A company needs an employee who is willing to meet their needs. Find out their needs, products and services. Find out about their goals, community service involvement and their treatment of employees. Research in the yellow pages, research on the Internet, ask friends and family who work at the company or arrange for a tour.

2. Always address your covering letter to a real person. Your research as outlined above will help you find the name of the manager or human resources person you will use to address your letter.

3. Express your passion for working, being organized and helping others. Let them know that you will bring your passion to the job site.

4. Ask for an interview. Create an intense sense of urgency for them to call you for an interview. Another company may hire you if this company doesn't act fast.

5. Your covering letter should only be one (1) page.
